New Mission Field For Crossover Director

Crossover is losing its National Director – Brian Winslade.  Brian is moving to a new challenge in a new mission field – Marin County, San Fransisco.  In this unique new setting Brian will need to be on his toes as he leads a church seeking to be a witness to the Gospel in a very post-modern setting.  At Brian’s last Crossover Task Force meeting in Sydney last week members had the opportunity at a farewell dinner to contribute what they appreciated about Brian over the last 3 years.  The night was rounded off with a gift of a Ken Duncan book of panoramic photos featuring the Australian landscape – in recognition of the extensive travel Brian has undertaken in his service of Australian churches.  Brian was also presented with an inscribed pen in recognition of his exceptional writing abilities and the contribution he made to ensuring the highest quality of Crossover resources. A letter has been sent to Baptist pastors nationally, which you can read below.

Dear Colleagues in Christ,

By now you would have received notification from Brian Winslade of his decision to accept a call to become Lead Pastor of Hillside church located in Marin County, the area immediately across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It is affiliated with the “Growing Healthy Churches” region (formerly known as American Baptist Churches of the West – a region within American Baptist Churches – USA).

It was appropriate that Brian had the opportunity to advise you first of this new direction, and now that has occurred, it is the right time to respond from the level of ABM.

As a National Council, we have been aware for several months of Brian’s growing sense of conviction that his time as National Director for Australian Baptist Ministries (Baptist Union of Australia) was drawing to a close, which has now been formally advised.

We have been grateful for the time God has entrusted Brian to the Australian Baptist family. Brian was in a true sense a pioneer as he assumed a new role of National Director which combined the functions of Crossover ministry along with ministry relating to the wider ABM arena. This led him to close relationships with not only the National Council and the Crossover task group, but a range of local churches, State Unions, agencies and other mission movements across our vast land.

During his appointment, Brian contributed to a significant period of change, which included development of a range of Delegated Bodies of ABM – which help shape and sharpen our missional thinking; creation of a new name and branding for our National Baptist ministry; new governance arrangements including the current period of transition from the traditional ‘President’ function to that of ‘National Chair’, and has raised the bar in the vision and contribution of Crossover, and to missional thinking generally.

At the Crossover task force session on 7th March a special time of sharing over Dinner warmly affirmed Brian in his ministry to Crossover over the past 3 years. On 24th March the National Council will meet to consider the next phase in our national leadership role, determine the processes towards this, and to also share a farewell dinner with Brian and Iiz.

During the interim period that now follows, the Crossover ministry is in good hands. Stan Fetting who has served Crossover as Communications Manager, has agreed to lead key Crossover operations as we transition to new arrangements. However there will be a significantly reduced capacity for the ABM operations during this transition period. The Officers of the Union will oversee key matters along with myself as Chair and members of the National Council during this time.

Brian concludes his responsibilities with Australian Baptist Ministries at the end of March.

As we now give thanks for the rich contribution of Brian to our Baptist family we also recognise and affirm that God is opening a new chapter for both Brian and liz, and the ABM. We join with Brian to share his delight at the opportunity to “roll up our sleeves once again in hands-on pastoral leadership.”

On behalf of the wider Baptist family I thank Brian for his ministry as National Director, and wish he and Liz the richest blessings of God as they become His missionaries in an affluent, well educated, highly spiritual yet far from Christian county. As Brian has well said “Now there’s a challenge to sink our teeth into!”
