Bereavement Resource

Crossover Australia is pleased to release our latest resource entitled “In The Shadow of Death,” specifically targeting those experiencing bereavement.

This resource was born from a phone conversation with a pastor who was planning the funeral service for his son. He inquired whether Crossover had anything suitable that could be given out (like an insert in the funeral order of service) that gently pointed people to Jesus and the hope of the good news. Sadly, we didn’t have anything available, but it sparked a thought – and here is the result.

As a pastor I’ve found walking with families during times of grief is a special privilege. Funeral services in particular are amazing opportunities for presenting the gospel to people with whom we might otherwise have little contact, and at a time when thoughts about life and death and eternity are spotlighted. The death of a loved one or friend is hugely confronting, and while it is not appropriate to abuse the vulnerability of grieving people, the opportunity to gently steer them toward the hope available in Christ is a great gift. Indeed, it is a responsibility

Over the years I’ve also found many Christian families welcome the opportunity within a bereavement context to witness to their relatives and friends about the life they, or their loved one, have as followers of Jesus – like telling stories in the funeral service. The enclosed resource is designed as a gentle keepsake that people can take away with them and ponder further. There are lots of ways that a resource like that this can be used:

• An insert in a funeral service order of service

• A resource available from a table in the church foyer

• A gift posted/given to grieving families during pastoral contact

• etc.

Obviously there is more to presenting the gospel than giving out a piece of paper. People come to faith through relationships and friendship. But sometimes the Holy Spirit also uses tools that plant life-producing seeds in the minds of those He is drawing to Himself, and maybe a resource like this one is something God might use in the hearts and minds of those confronted with the loss of a friend or relative.

If using a resource like this strikes a chord, our suggestion is that your church purchases a reasonably large supply that you have on hand for when the occasion is right. We will always seek to make prompt delivery orders whenever requested, but usually the planning for a funeral event is only a few days and it would be better to have stock on hand rather than rushing an order through.

For ordering purposes, please note Crossover is changing its order and payment system to “up front” and “online” (rather than post or fax), which is in keeping with industry standards and helps reduce our overheads. Payment can be made online via credit card, or if your church has an account with CRS, through their online ordering system. (NB: This resource is developed and owned by Crossover; we are merely utilizing the services of Christian Resource Specialties for payment and delivery systems.)
