REFOCUS Events – Rediscovering The Gospel As Word

Refocus_banner“The Church across Australia, including Baptist churches, needs to continue their commitment to the Gospel as deed but the challenge we must embrace is the need to rediscover our commitment to the Gospel as word.” So says Karl Faase from Olive Tree Media who is linking up with Crossover and State Baptist Unions to conduct training events designed to help give believers confidence in communicating the Gospel.

In laying down some background for the evangelism training event, Karl writes: “The Church, in countries like Australia, has rightly been described as the Protestant supermarket. There is a lot of movement between Protestant churches and people are no longer as concerned with denominational loyalty as they once were. There is general agreement that we need to move past rotating Christians through different churches and relying on this as a measure for our growth in numbers. Instead we should start to engage with those outside the Christian community, as well as re-engaging those who have been dormant for several years. For this to occur the Church must connect with its community and find ways to communicate the Gospel message.

In seeking to connect with our communities, we need to serve it as part of what we are called to as Christians. In recent years the word missional has become a common term in gospel ministry in western churches. It’s a hybrid term, seeking to combine the ministry of Gospel as word and Gospel as deed. It seeks to move the Church away from attractional ministry to focus on incarnational connection of the Gospel into the community. At its heart it’s a very helpful term to use for mission in our context. The weakness is that missional has defaulted to a focus on deed rather than word. It’s a focus on Jesus’ commitment to justice but it so often leads to a failure to be clear about the Gospel as word – sharing the message of the redemptive work of Jesus on the Cross for each person’s salvation.

The Church across Australia, including Baptist churches, needs to continue their commitment to the Gospel as deed but the challenge we must embrace is the need to rediscover our commitment to the Gospel as word. This can and should be done in a variety of ways – there is no silver bullet. For the Church to have the ultimate goal of saving souls for Christ “by all the means we can”, it is very important for it to also commit to ministries focused on Gospel as word and make them part of their regular yearly program. It’s not a case of either/or here!”

The seminar content includes:

  • Refocus on the Gospel as word – seeking to balance the missional approach of both word and deed.
  • The need for thoughtful, targeted cultural change in our churches – revitalising the local church will take organisational thinking and focus.
  • What does the community think of the Church & Christian faith.
  • Creating an effective Gospel event.
  • Communicating the Gospel & asking for a response.
  • What are the questions the community is asking and how do we respond?
